An entire life story, several attempts\u2026 After 55 years in what position is the society from those days on, what could we architects and urbanists contribute to settlements. Mehmet Ert\u00fcrk I\u015eIKPINAR<\/strong> was born on 23 March 1937 in Istanbul, Turkey. His father was Prof. Hasan Halet I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar, electrical engineer who studied at Robert College, \u0130stanbul, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA. His mother, Muazzez S\u0131d\u0131ka I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar was a celebrated lady judge for being the first lady criminal judge of the World. He is married to \u00dclk\u00fc I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar, Sociologist, M.A. specialized in Urban Sociology, and educationalist. Their daughter Muazzez G\u00fclt\u00fcrk I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar studied business at the Bogazici University, \u0130stanbul, specialized in the area of Finance in various global companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ert\u00fcrk I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar received his secondary school and high school educations at Robert\u2019s College, \u0130stanbul. Starting with the secondary school years he was interested in psychology. After graduation from high school he selected Architecture as the most prominent area that analyses human behavior appropriately. He entered the Section of Architecture of the Middle East Technical University, Ankara,Turkey in 1959. He received his B.Arch Degree in 1962 and M.Arch degree in 1964. Starting with 1960 he was interested in architectural psychology and became one of the first in Turkey. In 1964 he selected the theme of mental hospitals as his Master\u2019s Thesis for psychiatry is a field on one extreme of the study of human psychological behavior. In 1972 he presented a paper on effects of the physical environment on mental health with the cooperation of psychiatrist-psychologist-architect to the Second Architectural Psychology Congress in Lund, Sweden, and accentuated the importance of interdisciplinary studies in this field. 1972 he was assigned the duty of representing Prof. S.Hesselgren, Swedish architect and psychologist, one of the founders of Architectural Psychology. In 1974 he was assigned by the Cultural Under Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to participate in the Architectural Psychology Symposium assembled within the 18th International Applied Psychology Congress, Montr\u00e9al, Canada, where he presented a paper on ancient Turkish Architecture on the possible contributions of ancient Turkish architecture to architectural psychology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the period 1964-1974 I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar established an architectural planning and design consulting firm. In 1974 he had started to work at the Istanbul Illerbank Planning Department of the General Directorate of \u0130llerbank of the Minstry of Settlement and Puclic Works, with the intention of conducting extensive work in the area of Environmental Psychology. He participated in several planning studies, in several of these he conducted research at applied capacity in urban psychology. In 1979 I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar was assigned to duty by \u0130llerbank in England where he received certificates from the University College London in Development Planning and from the University of Surrey in the course organized for I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar by the English Prof. T. Lee, one of the founders of Environmental Psychology. He lectured the Psychology of Behavior Course at the Department of Landscape Architecture of the Department of Afforestation of the University of Istanbul in the 1986-1989 period. He received his Ph.D. in Urbanism at the Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul, on 1995. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having retired on 2000, I\u015f\u0131kp\u0131nar is presently carrying on with his profession, and presenting papers on Environmental Psychology and Architectural Psychology in scientific meetings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we had founded the METU PLAYERS at the Middle East Technical University , Ankara, Turkey, in 1960 could we think of 50 years ahead. The important issue is we conveyed a symbolic message to 55 years ahead. The logo I designed for the ODT\u00dc Players is still there and accessible as its symbol . Those who had lived the enthusiastic milieu in the METU\u2019s environment of barracks full of humanity ideals a newly flourishing social happening was the METU Players. On the side is its logo\u2026 This logo is still in its place\u2026 AND LIFE IS GOING ON\u2026\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORK CONDUCTED BY ERT\u00dcRK I\u015eIKPINAR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main axis of the work conducted has been that in our day the complexities encountered by the human in interactions with the physical and social environments should be taken into consideration through psychology approaches which considers the internal processes as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work has been conducted at the European Turkey, Kocaeli and Sakarya Regions of Turkey in planning and design research at planning and implementation phases. In this work environmental psychology and architectural psychology approaches have been utilized along with the classical approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Work conducted at applied and\/or theoretical basis enhance the period beginning the Year 1964 and continues at present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
